Rockies Edged into the Inevitable Within the MLB History Books

The Colorado Rockies are one of the worst teams in baseball. The club hit a new low against the Miami Marlins in Tuesday night’s 7-6 loss to the Miami Marlins. The Rockies became the first team since 1900 to trail in each of its first 29 games. It broke a tie with the St. Louis Browns, who set the record in 1910 after trailing in their first 28 games.  The mark was also set in the final inning with Colorado not behind until the final pitch. This Rockies team has been stuck in no man’s land since the start of the regular season.

Rockies Make Dreadful History in Miami

The last time the Rockies were either tied or ahead for an entire game dates back to September 26, 2023, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies had a chance to change the momentum within the clubhouse, especially after Ryan Feltner’s solid performance on the mound. He proceeded to throw eight innings of shutout baseball. Then the bottom of the ninth arrived. Feltner began the inning by allowing three baserunners with an RBI double by Luis Arráez, ending his bid for a shutout win. Justin Lawrence came into the game, which didn’t go as planned. Lawrence coughed up for straight baserunners, then a game-tying sacrifice fly to push the game into extra innings.

While the Rockies got another lead thanks to a Ryan McMahon double in the 10th inning, a Bryan De La Cruz double and Dane Myers single put an end to the game.

“That was a tough one. We shot ourselves in the foot,” said Rockies manager Bud Black, via The Denver Post.

What Can This Rockies Team Do Next?

At this point, the Rockies need to continue to let their young guys play every game they possibly can. As they develop, hone, and craft their skills, these prospects can try to build something special. Let this embarrassing record they have now be fuel to the fire for what’s to come in the future. There’s talent and a unique skill set to them, they just need to capitalize on it. Once some of these younger prospects like Jordan Beck, Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, Elehuris Montero, and Hunter Goodman get equated they could have an opportunity to turn this team around.

The one bright side to last night was Beck, who was promoted earlier this week, went 2-for-4 on the night. He singled in his first at-bat.
