Analyst suggests Buffalo Bills as good fit for former All-Pro cornerback
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills are in need of help in their secondary after releasing Tre’Davious White. Could they pursue a reunion with an old friend for assistance?

Dan Pizzuta of The 33rd Team thinks the Bills represent a great fit for cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who remains on the free-agent market in spite of a productive 2023 campaign.

Pizzuta notes that Buffalo really needs another cornerback opposite of Rasul Butler. The Bills didn’t make any signings to address the issue in free agency, and they didn’t select a corner in the NFL Draft until picking Penn State’s Daequan Hardy in the sixth round.

Gilmore spent this past season with the Dallas Cowboys and played in every game, registering 68 tackles, a couple of interceptions, a forced fumble and 13 passes defended.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was originally selected by Buffalo with the 10th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent the first five years of his career with the Bills, but didn’t really begin to get recognition until his final season with the club when he made his first Pro Bowl appearance after recording 48 tackles, five picks and 12 passes defended.

Gilmore went on to sign with the New England Patriots that ensuing offseason. The four years he spent with the Patriots represent the best stretch of his career, as he earned three trips to the Pro Bowl while also notching a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections. Most importantly, he helped lead New England to a Super Bowl championship during the 2018-19 campaign.

The Pats traded Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers in October 2021, where he earned another Pro Bowl nod in spite of appearing in just eight contests.

Gilmore then signed with the Indianapolis Colts for one year before being dealt to the Cowboys.

The Rock Hill, S.C. native still clearly has something left in the tank, and given Buffalo’s situation at cornerback, Gilmore would be a fine pickup for the club.
