The New York Jets were widely praised for their performance in the 2024 NFL Draft. Several outlets handed out good draft grades to the Jets, praising the team for addressing major needs and expertly moving up and down the board. Video footage from the Jets’ war room on draft day reveals that they were particularly pleased with one trade in particular.

Ari Meirov shared a video on social media that features a snippet from a Jets in-house video about the 2024 NFL Draft. In the clip, Jets general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh are discussing a potential trade down in the first round. The Jets ultimately did trade down one spot with the Minnesota Vikings, allowing the Vikings to trade up and draft JJ McCarthy.

Saleh described the trade as “free money!” since the Jets had no interest in drafting McCarthy, so they could safely move down one spot with no risk. The Jets ended up drafting Olu Fashanu and gaining extra draft capital.

Inside the #Jets draft room: GM Joe Douglas trading back one spot with the #Vikings so they can take JJ McCarthy, while the #Jets still get their guy (Olu Fashanu) and extra draft capital.

Here are the full trade details (and who each pick became):

Jets receive:

  • 2024 first-round pick (11th overall) >> T Olumuyiwa Fashanu
  • 2024 fourth-round pick (129th overall) >> Traded down for RB Isaiah Davis and CB Qwan-tez Stiggers
  • 2024 fifth-round pick (157th overall) >> Used in trade up for WR Malachi Corley

Vikings receive:

  • 2024 first-round pick (10th overall) >> QB JJ McCarthy
  • 2024 sixth-round pick (203rd overall) >> K Will Reichard

Joe Douglas essentially traded down one spot, still got the player he originally wanted, and added two extra players. Nice work, Joe.

Recapping the 2024 NFL Draft for the New York Jets

The Jets entered the draft with a slew of needs on the offensive side of the ball. New York spent five of their first seven picks on offense and added a few intriguing depth pieces on defense.

The New York Jets selected the following players in the 2024 NFL Draft:

  • Olumuyiwa Fashanu – T – First round (11th overall)
  • Malachi Corley – WR – Third round (65th overall)
  • Braelon Allen – RB – Fourth round (134th overall) via Baltimore
  • Jordan Travis – QB – Fifth round (171st overall)
  • Isaiah Davis – RB – Fifth round (173rd overall)
  • Qwan’tez Stiggers – CB – Sixth round (176th overall)
  • Jaylen Key – S – Seventh round (257th overall)

Aside from the awesome trade, the Olu Fashanu pick is great because it is both a win-now move and a long-term investment. The Jets need to do everything they can to protect Aaron Rodgers in 2024. Fashanu joins Morgan Moses, Tyron Smith, and John Simpson as new additions on the offensive line. The Jets have plenty of options and depth in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Malachi Corley is another nice addition. Corley has received Deebo Samuel comparisons and joins a wide receiver room that features Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Allen Lazard, and Xavier Gipson.

The Jets also grabbed a developmental QB in Jordan Travis. He can sit behind Aaron Rodgers this year and learn from the 40-year-old veteran signal caller.
