Meet the Chargers’ 2024 NFL Draft class: Grades for all 9 picks

The Los Angeles Chargers have entered a new era under Jim Harbaugh. The Chargers have endured a lot of change throughout this offseason, even before the NFL Draft.

Los Angeles renegotiated contracts with Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack and parted ways with veteran wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Austin Ekeler left for Washington in free agency and was replaced with Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins. The Chargers also added Harbaugh-style tight ends in Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst.

The Chargers were limited this offseason by a ballooning salary cap situation, which has left the team limited in terms of making big moves.

Thankfully, Los Angeles came into the 2024 NFL Draft with significant draft capital, including the fifth overall pick. The team made some solid moves and put some foundational pieces into place on both sides of the ball. Here are our grades for every pick made by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Chargers 2024 NFL Draft Grades For Every Pick

Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt (OL02) during the 2024 NFL Combine Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Alt – T – First round (5th overall)

Alt was widely considered the best tackle prospect on the board. Wide receiver was another huge need, but adding McConkey in the second is an excellent consolation prize. Adding Alt gives Los Angeles a nice pair of bookend tackles with Rashawn Slater.

This was a great pick. Alt was one of the best players available at a valuable position and both protects Justin Herbert and will help Harbaugh establish the run.

Grade: A

Ladd McConkey – WR – Second round (34th overall)

McConkey instantly becomes Herbert’s top offensive weapon. He is one of the best route runners in the entire draft who can manipulate coverage and easily get open at any level of the field. It’s not hard to see him becoming a target hog in the vein of Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Great value in the second round, excellent pick.

Grade: A

Junior Colson – LB – Third round (69th overall)

Everyone expected at least one Wolverine would end up on the Chargers. Colson was a productive linebacker who will step in day one as a starting inside linebacker. Harbaugh clearly loves the kid to draft him in the third round.

Grade: B

Justin Eboigbe – DT – Fourth round (105th overall)

Eboigbe should slot into the Chargers’ depth chart as a potential starter or rotational piece as 3-4 defensive end. He could provide some pass rush juice on the inside.

Grade: B

Tarheeb Still – CB – Fifth round (137th overall)

Still boasts inside/outside versatility and decent size at 6’0″ 189lbs. He projects as a solid backup/special teamer with some upside. The Chargers needed cornerback depth so it’s hard not to like the idea of this pick, but that doesn’t mean he’ll work out in the long term.

Grade: C+

Cam Hart – CB – Fifth round (140th overall)

Interesting to double up on cornerbacks with two picks in quick succession. It is also interesting to note that many project Hart to have a higher ceiling than Still.

Grade: B-

Kimani Vidal – RB – Sixth round (181st overall)

Vidal is the type of hard-working running back who Harbaugh seems to fall in love with. He can get what is blocked for him and will exert extra effort to get tough yards. It’s hard to project what his role on the team will be as he enters the summer no sure thing to make the final roster.

Grade: C

Brenden Rice – WR – Seventh round (225th overall)

Taking a seventh-round flyer on the son of an all-time great is never a bad move. Especially if your wide receiver depth is a serious concern. Good process pick.

Grade: B

Cornelius Johnson – WR – Seventh round (253rd overall – compensatory)

Another seventh-round flyer at receiver to round out the depth chart. Harbaugh gets another Wolverine. Another solid process pick.

Grade: B
